Summer on Etna Nord: the breath of the mountain in our wines

Summer among the rows of Etna Nord is never banal. Here, where the vine grows on ancient terraces at over 700 meters above sea level, it is the mountain itself that dictates the rhythms, with a climate that shapes each bunch of grapes with millimetric precision.
In this crucial phase of the season, different natural elements work together to influence the quality of the grapes. It is not just about heat and sun: it is a complex ecosystem, where every detail counts.
Constant ventilation: the breath of the mountain
On the northern slope of Etna, air currents are a daily presence. The wind quickly dries the humidity and naturally protects the bunches from the main fungal diseases. But it also does something more: it stimulates the plant to strengthen, contributing to a slower and more regular development. The result? Healthy, intact grapes, with a thicker and more resistant skin.
Cool nights, allies of elegance
Even when the day is scorching, the nights here can be surprisingly cool. This temperature change helps the vine maintain its natural acidity and develop clearer and more complex aromas. It is one of the secrets of that freshness that is found in every sip of Etna Bianco, Etna Rosato or Etna Rosso.
Altitude and light: a precious balance
The vineyards of Famiglia Statella extend between 650 and 800 meters above sea level, on ancient lava stone terraces. This privileged position slows down the ripening process, allowing the grapes to evolve slowly and with greater balance.
Furthermore, the northern side of Etna receives more delicate light than other areas: less direct exposure means more gradual ripening, preserving aromas and acidity without the risk of over-ripening.
Summer biodiversity: an ecosystem that works with us
Around the vines, in summer, life explodes: wild herbs, centuries-old olive trees, prickly pears and useful insects form a balance that protects and enriches the vineyard. The presence of these species promotes a more fertile and lively soil, contributing to the well-being of the plant and therefore to the final quality of the wine.
Volcanic soil
Our vines grow on volcanic soils that are unique in structure and composition. If you want to know more about the influence of lava soil on wine, we talked about it in this article →
In conclusion, summer on Etna Nord is not just a season: it is a natural laboratory in which climate, altitude and biodiversity merge to give life to grapes that contain complexity, balance and identity. And it is precisely from these months that the character of our wines takes shape.
