Calogero Statella Appointed Chevalier du Tastevin

A recognition that tells the story of a journey

Being appointed Chevalier du Tastevin is a rare honor, reserved for those who have shown dedication and skill in celebrating wine and the territories that give it life.
For Calogero Statella, the recognition came entirely unexpectedly — one of those milestones that seem distant until you suddenly realize you’ve reached them.

Calogero first learned about the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in 2000, during his time working alongside Elio Altare, who spoke of the fraternity with admiration and respect. At the time, it felt like a distant world — something almost unattainable.
Over the following years, his connection with Burgundy deepened through travels, tastings, and friendships built with many producers and personalities from the region.
It has been a journey of curiosity, listening, and exchange — one that today finds meaningful recognition.

His nomination was supported by Catherine Girard and Bertrand Gauvrit, friends and colleagues who shared this path with him.

The Ceremony at Clos de Vougeot

The investiture took place at Château du Clos de Vougeot, the historic heart of Burgundy.
Founded in 1934, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is the most prestigious wine fraternity in France. Created to promote Burgundy’s wines and culture, it now counts over 12,000 members worldwide, including winemakers, public figures, and wine professionals.

During the ceremony, new members are welcomed with the traditional proclamation:

“Par Noé, Père de la Vigne, Par Bacchus, Dieu du Vin, Par Saint-Vincent, Patron des Vignerons, nous vous armons Chevalier du Tastevin.”

The investiture is marked by a symbolic gesture — not with a sword, but with a vine branch, representing continuity and the deep bond between wine and the land.

Calogero recalls the moment vividly:

“When they called my name for the investiture, my legs were shaking. I’d never felt anything like it.”

After the ceremony, he dedicated the honor to his father — a central figure in his personal and professional journey.
A gesture of gratitude to the person who had always believed in him, passing on the passion and perseverance that continue to guide his work today.

A Bridge Between Etna and Burgundy

For Calogero, this nomination is not an arrival point but a confirmation — the recognition of a path built over time, through study, dialogue, and profound respect for the land and those who cultivate it.

It also represents a bridge between Etna and Burgundy: two volcanic territories, distant yet united by their strength of identity and the sensitivity required to interpret them.
Bringing a piece of Etna into an international context is, for Calogero, a way of honoring both the roots that formed him and the inspirations that shaped his approach to viticulture.

To be named Chevalier du Tastevin today means becoming part of a community that sees wine as a universal language — one that connects cultures and people through passion, knowledge, and respect for the land.

A recognition that honors Calogero, but also the work of a family that has always believed in time, care, and the enduring strength of nature.
